On Thursdays I share a question from a reader and try — I really, really do try my hardest — to let my readers give the advice…
What advice do or the experts have for an older mom (60) who is trying to be sex positive and promote a healthy body image for her 14yr old daughter?
My daughter loves trying on new clothes, she looks great in everything, she’s fit, happy and healthy! Yay! But I find myself remarking on “low-cut shirts” and “too-short shorts.” These are the same things I was shamed for as a young girl in the early 80s. However, my experiences going out looking cute, fit, and hot led me into some very troublesome encounters with men. Granted, my parents were nowhere near as involved as we are with our daughter and by fifteen I was deep into drugs and alcohol.
I know I’ve evolved and consider myself and my...
...ugs and alcohol.
I know I’ve evolved and consider myself and my husband — her Dad — to be quite progressive. I try to explain my discomfort to her about her looking so cute and fit when she goes out: There are creepy men out there who seek to take advantage of her. Am I projecting my bad experiences at that stage of my life onto her?
If I “let” her go out looking hot and sexy, am I failing her? Am I failing to warn her of the dangers in the world? Or should I encourage her to enjoy these times and what it feels like to look in the mirror and love what you see and to screw those creepy bastards? Should I really tell her that it’s on them and that it’s not her problem at all?
Please point me in a good direction to help her navigate being in this world, as wonderful, cute, smart, and… ugh… as sexy as she is!
